A-S-H® Material and Ash Handling

Babcock & Wilcox has served the pulp & paper industry for many years by providing a wide range of clean power production technologies and aftermarket support services including parts, equipment upgrades and field engineering.

B&W's single-drum recovery boiler, now the standard in the pulp and paper industry, provides high availability with safe operation and low maintenance. We have been at the forefront of technologies which improve boiler and cycle efficiency, such as firing higher solids concentration liquors, using low pressure steam to heat combustion air, and feedwater heating.

Benefits of our PR boiler design includes:

Our design features include:

A chemical and heat recovery boiler for the pulp and paper industry; concentrated black liquor and combustion air are introduced into the furnace where heat is recovered as steam for electricity generation and process heating, and the inorganic portion of the black liquor is recovered as sodium compounds.

Liquor processing capacity To 10,000,000 lb/day (4500 t/day) dry solids

Steam pressure To 1850 psi (12.6 MPa) design

Steam temperature To 950F (510C)

Fuel Pulp mill liquor Auxiliary fuels Natural gas and/or oil

Upgrade options to both B&W and non-B&W recovery boilers include:

B&W provides a comprehensive suite of emissions control solutions to reduce a wide range of emissions, including nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx) and other acid gases, particulate matter, mercury, and others. We also provide wastewater reduction solutions for zero liquid discharge objectives. Our well-proven technologies are innovative, reliable, and can be customized to fit most applications.

For more than 150 years, the Babcock & Wilcox name is synonymous with quality steam generation technologies. In fact, we wrote the book on Steam. From the initial patent in 1856 for the world’s first inherently safe water-tube boiler to diverse technologies using a wide range of fuels and the latest advanced steam cycles, our robust thermal energy solutions deliver reliability, availability and long-term operation.

Our vast experience includes boilers for utility-scale power plants, industrial scale and package boilers, circulating and bubbling fluidized-bed boilers, recovery boilers for pulp and paper mills, and boilers for renewable energy applications.

We’ve been at the forefront of developing Innovative carbon capture technologies for several decades. Both post-combustion and oxy-combustion technologies are available for existing and new installations. In addition, our BrightLoop™ chemical looping technology is flexible and can be used for a wide range of applications. The process isolates carbon dioxide for storage/sequestration or beneficial use while producing outputs such as hydrogen, steam and/or syngas.

Through our SPIG® product line, we provide an extensive range of turnkey cooling systems. Since 1936, we have designed, engineered and installed more than 10,000 wet cooling tower cells, more than 400 dry cooling systems and more than 35 hybrid systems. Our customized cooling solutions are engineered for a wide range of site-specific and project requirements, including high seismic and wind loads, vibration control, corrosion resistance, low-noise emission, sub-freezing operation, and seawater applications.

Our range of aftermarket services includes engineered component and system upgrades and modifications, replacement parts, field engineering support, and commissioning and start-up services, among many others. We perform this work on equipment regardless of the original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

B&W is the original equipment manufacturer of all Allen-Sherman-Hoff® (or A-S-H®) ash handling equipment, systems and replacement parts. Our extensive knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of various material combinations has made us an integral supplier of customized bottom ash, fly ash and other material conveyance solutions.

We supply state-of-the-art technology that allows plant operators to accurately view and monitor internal furnace and process applications. We were the first company to provide industrial viewing systems and remain committed to meeting the needs of our customers for reliable products and services.

Our reputable Diamond Electronics monitoring products include: high definition visible and infrared light cameras (fixed and portable), process gas temperature measuring pyrometers, temperature measurement software, and site service and in-house

B&W is the original equipment manufacturer of all Diamond Power® boiler cleaning equipment, sootblowers, systems and replacement parts. We can also supply parts and upgrades for other OEM sootblowers and equipment. Boiler cleaning systems are available in steam/air, high pressure water, and dual-media air heater cleaning configurations. We also provide components which are unique to the pulp & paper industry including smelt spouts, port rodders and liquor gun cleaners.
