Within the circulation of the Gazette, there have to be dozens of readers who, like me, had the duty and honor of handling and caring for classified material while serving our country in government service. Chain of custody, locked safes, courier bags, burn bags, and “need to know” were a way of life. Having sworn the oath to serve, we took the duty and responsibility very seriously. It must grate on them, as it does on me, to see classified material handled by the former president the way it was. We were subject to severe penalties for mishandling such material regardless of our politics. If no one is above the law in this country, the former president must be subject to the same penalties.
