A WGAL viewer is asking the 8 On Your Side team about water line protection.

A letter is once again appearing in mailboxes that states you are responsible for the water line running through your property.

For just $5.49 a month, you can buy water line protection.

The letter claims it could cost you thousands of dollars to repair that water line that comes in from the main in the street.

Naturally, consumers want to know: Is this a scam?

The 8 On Your Side team has looked into this letter many times over the years. We won't call this a scam, but we will call it a waste of money.

It's true that homeowners are responsible for the water line on their property.

The shut-off valve for your property is usually near your front sidewalk. Anything between that valve and your home is your responsibility.

But that water line very seldom fails. Research done by the 8 On Your Side team shows that less than 1% of these lines will fail over a ten-year period.

In some cases, your homeowner's insurance policy may already provide coverage for the water line on your property. If not, you may be able to purchase additional protection on your policy.
